You Are What You Read
November 2019
Aimee Magee is a visual artist specialising in sculpture & installation and currently works from Pollen Studio and Gallery. She graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Art in 2016 part of which she also conducted studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
Aimee's practice explores an array of historical and political themes, which manifests in her choice of media. Using ready available, eco-friendly materials such as bread and newspaper the artists plays with the symbols inherit in them, while using traditional craft methods to subvert their meaning.
This exhibition focuses on the plaiting and weaving newspaper. she creates installations, sculptures and prints, stemming from desire to change factors we usually have no control over, such as what we are told and how we are told via an often biased media. "You Are What You Read" investigates influencing a negative situation into a more positive one, whilst exposing the negative influencer for what it truly is. The sculptures are decapitated by information overload and fake news, they have lost the ability to think for themselves. The repetitive process of plaiting and weaving is meditative and contemplative process done with positive intent.
Since graduating Aimee has been nominated for the Clyde & Co. Arts Award in London, worked on community arts projects with the Beat Carnival as a member of the Carnival Arts Steering Group and exhibited work in Stendhal festival. This is her first solo show.
